On Monday March 15th, 7 workers from the Workplace Project of Long Island will be stopping in Philadelphia as they walk all the way to Washington, D.C. for the Immigration Reform Demonstration on March 21st.

Meet at the Catholic Worker
House of Grace at 1824 E Lehigh Ave
Monday March 15th at 6:30 pm
for a pot-luck and talk.

We will hear stories from the travelers about their struggle, their work, and how it relates to immigration reform! Please bring your favorite dish to share.
The Workplace Project was founded on the belief that while simply providing services might alleviate some of the pain of exploitation; it would do nothing to fix the problems in the long run. Instead, it has chosen to build community centers of and for immigrants, which work through a cycle of outreach, leadership training, membership building, and organizing for change in the labor context.
We are honored to host this group and hope to see you there.

Postponing Feb 11th event due to snow storm

We are very sorry, but we have decided to postpone Thursday night's event, "Solidarity - Then and Now," due to the coming snow storm.  After so much work, we were reluctant to do so, but felt it was the best decision.  We are still really excited about the event, and are rescheduling it for Thursday Feb 25 or Thursday Mar 4.  We will send an email once we get a final answer on the space.

Please help us spread the word about this change of plans within your network of contacts.

Sorry for any inconvenience, but we look forward to bringing everyone together for a great night in 2 or 3 weeks.

Special February Coalition Meeting - Note change of venue

For our February coalition meeting, we're extending a special invitation to the original Philadelphia Sanctuary Congregations from the 1980s to share stories about their vision and passion. And we'll be sharing stories about this NEW Sanctuary Movement happening now in Philadelphia.

This special gathering will be held at Tabernacle United Church (Chestnut and 37th), which was the first Philadelphia congregation to declare sanctuary status in the original movement.

There are several goals:
1) To celebrate the passions and visions that created the original movement in a reunion of those Philadelphia Sanctuary congregations

2) To hear stories of that rich history in order to be inspired by and to learn from that collective wisdom for NSM's work today

3) To share the NSM vision and to forge personal relationships with the network of Sanctuary congregations

4) To invite individuals and congregations to reaffirm a commitment to stand in solidarity with immigrant communities in Philadelphia today, especially through NSM's campaign to end the "Secure Communities" program in the city

More details to follow, but save the date now!

The Cambodian Community's Struggle / La Lucha de la Comunidad de Camboya

versión en español abajo...

New Sanctuary Movement's
Coalition Meeting:
The Cambodian Community's Struggle
Thursday November 12th @ 7pm
Visitation BVM Church
300 E. Lehigh Ave

Please join us for an evening with Mia-lia, the Youth Programs Coordinator at the Cambodian Association of Greater Philadelphia, to learn about the Cambodian-American community's struggle against an unjust immigration system. Some 250 Cambodian-Americans have been deported to Cambodia, where many of them have little family, speak limited Khmer, and have to fight everyday to survive in a country they once fled as child refugees. Over 1500 Cambodian-Americans are unable to live full and productive lives for months and years, while they await inevitable deportation and separation from their loved ones.

We will also watch a segment of Sentenced Home, a film about three young Cambodian refugees raised as Americans in inner-city projects near Seattle. Each made a rash decision as a teenager that irrevocably shaped their destiny. Now facing deportation back to Cambodia years later, they find themsevles caught between a tragic past, colliding cultural identities, and an uncertain future, by a system that doesn't offer second chances.

Please feel free to bring a friend and food to share. We look forward to seeing you all!

In Peace and Solidarity,
Jen and Peter

Nuevo Movimiento Santuario
Reunión de Coalición:
La Lucha de la Comunidad de Camboya
Jueves el 12 de Noviembre a las 7pm
Iglesia Visitacion BVM
300 Calle E. Lehigh
